Extractor and Cooker Hoods

  • What is an extractor fan/cooker hood?

An extractor fan/cooker hood is a kitchen appliance containing a mechanical fan. Often found above ovens, hobs and stoves, they remove potentially harmful cooking fumes, heat, odours, smoke and airborne grease from the kitchen environment, making it safer and more pleasant to be in. Some can be used with filters to recirculate cleaned air back into the kitchen, while others will send air outside.

  • What is the difference between grease filters and carbon filters?

A grease filter is attached to every extractor hood and is usually made from a metal like aluminium or steel which helps to trap grease particles generated while cooking. Whereas the carbon filters in the extractor hood absorb the odours and dirt from the air when the cooker hood sucks in the air from the kitchen, before it is returned into the room. Carbon filters are optional and normally only used if you do not have access to an outside wall.

  • Is my extractor fan going to cause too much disturbance?

By reading the detailed product guides alongside our products, you will find the noise level for each extractor fan. The bigger the extractor fan, the more noise they are likely to make. All extractor fan models at Cookology feature modern technology designed to reduce unwanted effects such as noise levels.

  • What are the different types of extractor fan?

There are three types of extractor fans you can use to modernise your kitchen.

Island cooker hoods are located above a kitchen island and are ceiling-mounted.

Ceiling hoods are mounted against your ceiling using attachments and a base plate. As they tend to lie flat against your ceiling, ceiling hoods are usually remote control-operated.

Wall-mounted cooker hoods attach to the wall above the cooker, and for this reason more often than not come a vertical extractor surface. Wall-mounted hoods help reduce loss of space and the risk of bumping your head.

  • What size cooker hood do I need?

The best way to check what size you need is to measure the length and width of the oven/cooker unit. You can then use these dimensions to search through our available Cookology cooker hoods for designs that match, which includes filters to show only the cooker hoods that fit your unit. And remember to always get a new cooker hood fitted by a professional fitter/electrician.

  • How can I be sure I am getting the right extractor fan/cooker hood for me?

At Cookology, our online store is packed with information on each of our ovens, including its energy rating, dimensions and mounting type, so you can make an informed decision on your next extractor fan or cooker hood unit. Once you have narrowed down the extractor fan/cooker hood we stock fitting your requirements, check out our reviews section. You may discover something you did not know!

  • Should I duct outside or use carbon filters on my cooker hood?

Cookology cooker hoods are an essential kitchen appliance if you want to extract moisture, smoke, smell and grease from your kitchen when you cook or bake. There are a variety of designs, sizes and types to choose from and the type of cooker hood you choose and the way you use it to extract odours from your kitchen will affect the type of filters that your cooker hood requires.

Most cooker hoods can be ducted outside via a ducting kit, but if you do not have access to an outside wall, you can recirculate the air back in your kitchen using the recommended carbon filters which will remove smells and clean the air. Both are efficient methods, however ducting outside will get you the maximum extraction rate possible. In essence, if your Cookology cooker hood is vented externally, there is no need for carbon filters as all smells are vented outside. However, grease and carbon filters should still be used.
